The “Synagogue Security Tool Kit” is causing Jewish organizations “to react as they never have before about physical security and self-defense in the tradition of Jabotinsky” said Moshe Phillips, National Director of Herut North America. “Herut has started a revolution in the way Jews are thinking about taking shul security into their own hands.”

* The Jewish Federations of North America rushed out a white paper in response to the Tool Kit:
” … according to the Secure Community Network (SCN), the official safety and security organization for the North American Jewish Community, the question being asked by American houses of worship is: To arm or not to arm?
“We are rethinking our approach” to security, Jewish Federations of North American (JFNA) CEO Eric D. Fingerhut told The Jerusalem Post. “I wish this was not the reality, but it is.”

This development could not be more timely, suggested Ron East, founder of the new Shomrim community patrols being rolled out in 5 Canadian cities.
“The arrest of a neo-Nazi suspect in Racine, Wisconsin and desecration of the synagogue in Lincoln, Nebraska last week shows that Herut’s initiative deserves serious review by our community leaders. Shomrim is learning from the kit.”
US federal investigators say 22 year old Yousef Barasneh was a part of a white supremacy group known as “The Base”, targeting minorities across the country. He was charged last week with conspiracy in connection to anti-Semitic graffiti painted in September on Beth Israel Sinai Congregation in Racine. In November, federal investigators arrested 18-year-old Richard Tobin of New Jersey for “[directing] others to ‘tag the sh**’ out of synagogues,” first a synagogue in Hancock, Michigan and then Beth Israel.
On January 13th in Nebraska, a male spray painted the door of the Lincoln South Street Temple and stepped back and taking a photo of his offensive work.
A swastika had been drawn in red spray paint on the front steps, and the words “Black Shirt” were spray painted on the temple doors. A Go Fund Me to repair the damage had doubled the target amount within a week.
“We look forward to having discussions with Winnipeg synagogues to incorporate our Shomrim roaming patrols into overall security protocol”, said East, noting “Canada is not immune from threats to our safety whether by neo-Nazis, Islamists or progressive radicals – or copycats.”
